Abstract

The purpose of this experiment was to find out to what extent the ethnicity of students affects their academic results and whether there are specific factors that play an important role in these students’ performance. The researcher’s hypothesis was that if the effect of ethnicity on academic results is tested, then students from certain ethnicities will have better results than others due to the variations in the psychological and social aspects of each group. 100 students were separated into 5 ethnic groups each with 20 students (American, Indian, Chinese, African-American, and South-American), who all took home Parental Authorization Forms. The researcher wrote one questionnaire asking about the students’ academic results and their sense of belonging in school, and another one about the self-determination theory. Once the students filled them out, the experimenter compared the results from both questionnaires by ethnic groups. After the data was analyzed, the results showed that the students with the best academic results were the Indian ones. The researcher’s hypothesis was supported, because this group said they felt the most psychologically and socially well in the school environment. This same pattern was followed in other ethnic groups who showed good academic results. This project was of practical value because the results showed that by having positive feelings about school and someone’s ability, their academic results will improve. This can therefore help students who are struggling with school know that in order to strive, they should improve themselves psychologically and socially in the school environment.
