Abstract
The Effect of Long Term Isolation on Mental Health: A Literature Review
The purpose of this literature review was to analyze sources related to the effect of long-term isolation on one’s mental health and come to conclusions based on this existing research. According to all of the research examined, the researcher’s main thesis is that long-term social isolation negatively affects one’s mental health through changes in emotional and social behavior and by causing mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. This was proven by all of the eleven experiments analyzed, even if they each had a slightly different way of approaching the topic. For instance, three of those experiments were done with mice and rats, and their results all showed that long-term social isolation caused behavioral and emotional changes. Additionally, four of the studies that were conducted with humans also showed social/behavioral changes as a result of isolation. Lastly, four experiments analyzed had results that indicated that long-term social isolation led to increases in levels of depression and anxiety in the general population. Some of those even stated that levels of insomnia, acute stress, and PTSD rose after a long period of social isolation. Since multiple experiments had results that supported each part of the thesis, it is logical to conclude that even if there were some limitations to each study, the overall conclusion is accurate. This project was of practical value since its conclusions can help those suffering from these effects of social isolation because it allows scientists to support them and to spread information to the public.
